The word "medical" is used loosely in treatment names, which blurs what it means. Here's how we draw the line.
A professional facial
Cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, massage and mask steps supporting the general health and appearance of the skin. Gentle formulas, suitable for everyone, repeated at regular intervals. The goal is care and maintenance.
A medical facial
A protocol planned around a specific concern, using higher-concentration actives. For targets such as acne, stubborn pigmentation, pore appearance or texture, the session count and ingredients are set from the start. The skin's response is assessed between sessions and the intensity adjusted.
What differs in practice?
*Analysis.* A medical protocol always begins with a detailed skin analysis. Skin type, barrier condition, current products and medication are all asked about — if you use retinoids, the protocol changes.
*Course logic.* No result is expected from a single session. A programme of four to six sessions, three to four weeks apart.
*Aftercare.* The home routine is part of the protocol, not an option. What is done in the studio is undone by what isn't done at home.
*A sensitivity window.* The skin is more reactive for a few days afterwards. Sun protection and a pause on actives are mandatory in that period.
Where the physician's territory begins
Prescription products, injections and anything requiring a medical diagnosis are outside our field. When we see active widespread acne, a suspicious mark or persistent redness (possible rosacea) we recommend dermatology. Care doesn't replace treatment; it walks beside it.
Who it isn't suitable for
Ingredients are changed during pregnancy. We postpone with active herpes, open wounds, sunburn or a recent medical procedure.
At the first appointment we decide together which approach fits — and often the answer is "three basic sessions first, then we'll see".
